BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. A licensed provider reviews your full health history and decides whether any treatment is right for you.
What BMI tells you
Body mass index compares your weight to your height. It's a quick, widely used way to screen whether your weight may be affecting your health, and it's one of the first numbers a provider looks at.
How it's calculated
Your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. In US units: weight (lb) × 703 ÷ height (in)².
Why it matters
Higher BMI is linked with greater risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea and joint pain.
Where it falls short
BMI doesn't measure body fat directly. It can read high in very muscular people and low in older adults who've lost muscle.
Adult BMI ranges
These are the standard ranges for adults 20 and older. They aren't used for children, teens or during pregnancy.
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 and above | Obesity |
Beyond the number
Waist size
Fat stored around the belly carries more health risk. For many adults, a waist over 35 in (women) or 40 in (men) is a reason to talk with a provider.
Background and age
Health risks can start at a lower BMI for some people, including many of Asian descent. Older adults may be healthiest at a slightly higher BMI.
Small changes count
Losing even 5% to 10% of body weight can improve blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol for many people.
Common questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is in the healthy weight range. 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and 30 or higher is in the obesity range.
Is BMI accurate?
It's a useful screening tool, but not a diagnosis. It doesn't separate muscle from fat or show where fat is stored. A provider looks at BMI alongside your health history, waist size and lab results.
What BMI do you need for GLP-1 medication?
FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for weight management are labeled for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. A licensed provider reviews your full health history and decides whether any treatment is right for you.
